What
is My Role in the School?
HUNGARY
For 2008, CETP is placing teachers in communities in all regions of Hungary (see
list).
| I
gave my students a reason to speak English.
By this I mean that I wasn't a text
book or a state-issued test, or part
of a panel of slightly terrifying teachers
demanding to know the rules for using
"who" and "whom."
Instead, I was an actual person who,
whether I liked it or not, represented
an English-speaking country that was
of particular interest to my students.

Our
participants are English Conversation teachers at
the elementary, junior high, high school (vocational/technical
or college prep), or university level. Positions
for dual language conversation teachers of English/German
and English/French are also offered, as well as
for teachers of English for Special Purposes (e.g.,
chemistry, economics, or law). Many schools are
in need of US History and Literature or "Culture
and Civilization" teachers, in addition to
English Conversation teachers.
In
nearly every case, with the exception of very
small towns where little to no English program
exists, students will have local teachers responsible
primarily for teaching English grammar. CETP's
Conversation teachers are responsible for enhancing
students' oral fluency through conversation practice,
classroom drills, games, audio-visual instruction,
and listening comprehension. High school teachers
may be asked to help prepare students for stringent
graduation and national language exams as well.
Conversation
teachers also get involved in extracurricular
activities such as sports leagues and drama and
musical productions. Most CETP volunteers also
work tutoring private students or teaching adult
groups.

| About
the Schools and Communities |
CETP places teachers in publicly accredited schools to include a few church-run schools. We work with elementary, middle schools, and high schools, and sometimes have a position or two in universities as well. The range of schools varies slightly from year to year.

My reception here in Naklo has been
tremendous. Everyone has been nice
and helpful. As an east coast
American, I forgot that people could
be so nice! The reaction within the
school has been equally flattering.
Since the first day, the students
have been really friendly and have
paid special attention to me.

Most placements are in schools in smaller cities and towns with the greatest need for native English-speaking teachers, though there are also placements in larger cities and smaller villages. CETP attempts to grant requests for specific placement locations if there is a solid reason for the request. When it comes time for placing teachers (May and June), we match the specific needs of the school to the teachers' interests, experience, population size preference, and living preference. In most cases it is possible to grant requests by two volunteers who wish to be placed together either at the same school or in the same town. It is also possible to arrange placements for married couples and families with children, given enough advance notice. In almost all cases when an applicant has either a teaching certificate or TESL certificate plus 20 hours in the classroom, CETP can grant preference for location and size of community as well as type of school. You may mark your preferences on the application form.

You
are an employee of the school and teach on a full-time
basis (see
details), and get paid according to the same scale as your Hungarian colleagues. You also receive national health insurance and any other benefits which your colleagues receive.
Our
most successful teachers become fully integrated
in school life and actively pursue the extracurricular
activities the school offers. For example, many
of our schools enter a performance in the nation-wide
Drama Festival, and our teachers frequently work
with the students and other English teachers on
the school play. CETP teachers also play sports
and participate in school clubs. Some even begin
a school newspaper or literary magazine of students'
writing, and CETP encourages all such efforts.
Our teachers find that efforts to become an active
part of the community extremely rewarding, and
often those pursuits form some of their best memories.
